Modular Robotics makes systems that let you build robots out of lots and lots of tiny robots.
The company is a spinoff from Carnegie Mellon University. Founders Eric Schweikardt and Mark D Gross have continued to lead the company since 2008. Modular Robotics is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, USA, with mostly remote team members all over the world. Early venture capital and grant funding from the National Science Foundation helped the company grow into an agile, sustainable organization.
We make robots out of lots and lots of tiny robots.
Cubelets robot blocks are used by kids all around the world to build models of natural systems and learn about STEM, design, complexity, and emergence.
They are easy to use and fun to play with, and live in the overlap between traditional building sets and rover robotics.
By playing in the intersection of modalities, Cubelets users get exposed to many complex patterns like: levels of abstraction, graph theory, control systems, data flow, emergent behavior, and recursion. Cubelets embody all the details of these things, letting kids gain intuitions about the world that could previously only be attained after learning programming and electronics.
Helping kids become better thinkers and better designers will help them create better solutions to complex problems.
Solving big problems takes a lot of brains, different perspectives, and a shared ability to think openly and critically about the topics at hand. Often one big problem is actually made up of many little problems that may or may not have anything to do with each other at the surface.
It’s for this space that Modular Robotics has invested time and energy into developing Cubelets and getting them into the hands of thousands of people (grown-ups and kids alike) in an effort to give every person the chance to learn better through play.
There’s nothing that humanity needs more.
Research and development at Modular Robotics has been generously funded in part by SBIR grants from the National Science Foundation.
